Fresh off the lines at Iran’s Tehran University, the Surena 2 is the kind of walking humanoid robot that we’ve been seeing for quite some time, even right here. It began life as a remote controlled humanoid robot on wheels, but with some work and engineering, Tehran University developed the Surena 2.
Named for a Persian warrior back when there was a Persia, and introduced by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Surena 2 stands 4.7 feet tall, can carry its own body weight of 99 pounds and will reportedly get speech and vision modules later on.
What applications this has are somewhat limited at this stage of the game, but possibilities both pleasant and unpleasant suggest themselves, especially given the martial nature of Surena 2′s naming and Iran’s recent work in nuclear power.
